CAB file format

CAB FILE FORMAT

MANAGE CAB FILES

CAB FILES, MORE INFORMATION

extract cab files

MS CAB (Microsoft Cabinet format) is a compressed archive standard developed by Microsoft, employing various compression algorithms standards including public domain Phil Katz's Deflate (default compressor for .zip format), to create various types of compressed packages used for multiple purposes, such as distribution of software components and updates.

CAB packages function for Microsoft Windows world is similar to some extent to TAR in Unix/Linux world, or to functions later performed by Microsoft's WIM Windows Imaging Format (supported by PeaZip for extraction and archiving) for Vista and more recent systems.

CAB format is read-only supported in PeaZip, meaning the software provides functions to open (browsing, searching), test, and extract CAB packages; .cab extension is associated by default to PeaZip during installation of Microsoft Windows packages (read-supported formats group in File associations screen), this option can be selected/deselected running custom installation or, later, from application's main menu Options > System integration.

COMPRESSION RATIO cab vs zip

Usually moderate, in most common cases CAB packages comes with fast but moderate Deflate compression.

ADVANCED OPTIONS N/A
CAB is usually employed as distribution for software packages, cannot be evaluated in terms of pure archiving options.

Manage CAB files

PeaZip offers read-only support for CAB archives, providing a free alternative to open (list content) and extract .cab packages under Windows and Linux operating systems. The software can also be used to convert CAB files to any other write-supported format (i.e. re-pack existing Cabinet file into zip, 7z, etc).

As alternative, 7-Zip (on MS Windows systems) and p7zip (on Linux/BSD), both free and Open Source tools, are recommended to manage cab file format.

Create / update CAB file

PeaZip support for CAB files is read-only, the application cannot write to .cab format to create a new package or to edit an existing one.

Convert CAB files to other format

To convert existing files into another archive format, Convert button extracts and then re-pack the output into any write-supported format (7z, arc, pea, tar, zip...), optionally keeping or discarding original archives.
This process can be used either for creating an output archive for each individual input item, or for consolidating all input data in a single output archive.

    • Use context menu entry "Extract..." for full extraction screen GUI where to set output path and other options

    • Select one or more archives and use context menu entry Extract here or Extract here (to new folder) for quick extraction with no further confirmation

    • Extract all to... button activate a simplified procedure only asking for output path

    • Simply drag & drop desired objects from the application to the system

    • Doubleclick on an archived file to open it in preview mode, i.e. to inspect its content before considering the need for real extraction
