RAR
is a mainsteam archive format introduced by
WinRAR
for Windows platform and
ported to Linux (extraction only) by the same Author of WinRAR.
RAR format is well known
for the high compression ratio, strong encryption and advanced data
recovery capabilities (recovery records).
No free software is available for
RAR compression, but UNRAR is available as free and open source
software both for Linux and Windows, with the clause of not reverse
engineering the code for implementing RAR compression.
PeaZip supports by default RAR
browsing,
testing and extraction on
Linux and Windows, through the open source implementation rewritten in
7-Zip and p7zip by Igor Pavlov (as for what is known, the non reverse
engineering
clause of the RAR compression algorithm however applies as well for the
rewritten version).
To extract one or more files supported through 7Z frontend (7Z, RAR,
TAR, ZIP and more) you can:
- Use context menu entry "- Extract archive(s) here"
- Use context menu entry "- Extract archive(s) to" to
be asked for output path
- Open it in PeaZip and use
"Extract all" button (you can chose output
path in "I/O" tab) or "Extract all to" to be asked for output path
- Open it in PeaZip and
doubleclick on an archived file to preview it
- Open it in PeaZip,
rightclick and use PeaZip's context menu to extract or preview selected
