GZ file format, GZip compression algorithm

extract .gz file

GZip is a single file compression format, identified by .gz extension, created for GZip (GNU Zip or gratis Zip) project in 1992 by Jean-Loup Gailly and Mark Adler, based on DEFLATE algorithm (also used as default algorithm in PKZip/WinZip's .ZIP format), a combination of Lempel-Ziv coding (LZ77) and Huffman coding.

7-Zip (and PeaZip, which handles zip and gzip files through Open Source 7-Zip/p7Zip binary backend) use an custom optimized DEFLATE implementation producing better compression ratios than standard reference DEFLATE implementation, keeping full compatibility with other compression utilities working on .gzip files, but using more processor time (gzip compression and extraction is however very fast, and CPU/RAM-light, for today's machines capabilities).
PeaZip has full support for GZip standard, including compression, listing, testing, and extraction.

TAR.GZ

When it is recommended to use GZ format: in brief, Gzip is usually employed for compressing TAR packages on Linux and other Unix-like systems.

gzip file

Gzip's GZ file format lacks file archiving feature - it can compress each single file, but cannot consolidate multiple input file in a single (compressed) container archive - for that reason it is commonly used on Unix/Linux world to compress TAR archives (as well as BZip2, lzma / XZ,...) - archiving format which can consolidate multiple files in a single package and preserve filesystem information (file attributes, date/time etc), but lacks compression capabilities - producing TGZ file (if single file extension convention is used) or TAR.GZ file.

SPEED gz file extraction

Very high, due fast and lightweight compression algorithm, not encumbered by extra features.

COMPRESSION RATIO gzip algorithm

Classic Deflate file compressor, comparable to ZIP and PEA, but inferior to BZip2 or modern compressors as 7Z and RAR format.

ADVANCED OPTIONS decompress GZ format
GZip standard is meant only to provide single file compression, other features including archival are out of its scope.

Create, open, extract GZIP files

PeaZip offers full read / write support for GZ format.
When a directory or multiple files are added to a Gzip file, PeaZip automatically switches on "Tar before" option, creating a TAR archive from input data which is then sent to GZip compression - the very same happens for other compression-only types as BZip2, XZ, ZPAQ, and QUAD/BALZ.
Chaining Gzip compression after Tar archiving triggers solid compression, meaning the whole input data is treated as a single entity allowing to produce generally better compression performances that treating each file as a separate case.
GZip format does not support encryption (files of this type cannot be password protected).

As alternative, 7-Zip (on MS Windows systems) and p7zip (on Linux/BSD), both free and Open Source tools, are recommended for working with Gzip file format.

Compress to GZ format

Use one of the following procedures to compress files / folders to .gz format, chosing "Gzip" in archive format picker in archiving dialog.

  • From the system's file explorer

    • Select files and folders and use context menu entry PeaZip, Add to archive: you will be prompted to archive creation screen, allowing to set compression settings, output destination, and other options.

  • From PeaZip

    • Select files and folders, and use Add button (or application's context menu entry of same name) to be prompted archive creation screen

    • Drag and drop files / folders from the system to a PeaZip instance

When adding folders or multiple files in GZ format PeaZip automatically switches "Tar before" switch on. This option (that is available for all formats) consolidate input data into a tar archive before actual compression, providing
  • a way to save and preserve Unix/Linux file metadata which might not be supported by the final format
  • input consolidation provides solid compression benefits

Convert GZ files

File converter procedure using Convert button extracts any read supported format (including GZ) and then re-pack it into a suitable write-supported format (7z, arc, pea, tar, wim, zip...), optionally keeping or discarding original archives.

This makes possible to convert each individual input files in the new format, or consolidating all input items into a single output archive of the new selected format.

Open and extract GZ file

Use one of the procedures described below to open and decompress a Gzip compressed file

  • From the system

    • To view archive's content (a single file, or often a TAr archive packing the actual content), open it in PeaZip with double click (if file extension is associated with the application), or using system context menu "Open as archive" entry

    • Use context menu entry "Extract..." for full extraction screen GUI where to set output path and other options

    • Select one or more archives and use context menu entry Extract here or Extract here (to new folder) for quick extraction with no further confirmation

  • Within PeaZip main application

    • Extract button shows full featured archive extraction screen providing access to all options (set output path, open output path after extraction, keep or delete original archives, etc)

    • Extract all to... button activate a simplified dialog only asking for output path

    • Simply drag & drop desired objects from the application to the system

    • Doubleclick on an archived file to open it in preview mode, i.e. to inspect its content before considering the need for real extraction

To work on a GZipped TAR file (TGZ or TAR.GZ extension) you will need to uncompress the tar container before using aforementioned methods - it is a two-step non atomic operation.
