PeaZip
installers for Windows, from 4.5 up to release 4.8, were released in
partnership
with AVG , offering
optional installation of AVG
Security Toolbar (with
optional AVG Secure Search homepage and search provider) during the
installation process.
This partnership is meant to suggest users high quality free security
software to efficiently protect their systems with state of art
solutions.
|
This
partnership applies only to PeaZip for Windows and PeaZip for
Windows 64 bit installers.
All other packages does not feature advertising bundle: Linux packages,
PeaZip Portable packages, and PeaZip installers (plain) packages.
|
How does the bundle works
- The installation process offers to
install AVG Security Toolbar, displaying complete and correct
information and options about the recommended software in the offer
screen
- at any time during the installation the
user can return to the offer screen and change choice
- Installation of the partner's bundle is
optional (PeaZip installation can be completed without installing the
bundle) and can be declined or customized by the user in order to
install only desired components, or no budled component at all
- the user's choice will never be ignored
or overridden by the installer
- If the user accept the recommendation of
AVG
Security Toolbar or AVG Secure Search (homepage or search provider),
open browser's instances will be closed to allow installation of the
AVG components
- Once installed, bundled components can be
removed by the user, safely and cleanly, in no way the user will be
hampered in uninstalling or otherwise modifying
the installed software
|
How to avoid/remove third parts bundle
- Use a non-partnership package, i.e. plain
installers
(linked in download page for PeaZip and PeaZip 64 bit) or PeaZip
Portable: they does not contain partnership bundle.
- If a partnership installer is used, the
recommendation is not mandatory for PeaZip installation and can be
declined: user choice is never overridden
- Once installed, any change can be reverted
- AVG Security Toolbar can be unistalled
from control panel, or can be disabled from the browser(s) - please
note that disabling is not equivalent to uninstalling, as the component
is disabled but not removed from the system and can be re-enabled when
desired without repeating the installation
- AVG Secure Search homepage can be
changed from the browser(s) setting a new homepage, e.g in IE from
Tools > Internet Options, in FF in Options > General, in Chrome
in Settings > Homepage
- AVG Secure Search search provider can
be changed from the browser(s), either removing, disabling or changing
priority of the AVG search provider.

Reporting
problems
Please
report to me any
problem and suggestion either with PeaZip partnership installer or the
partner product.
When
reporting issues please try to be more informative and detailed as
possible, i.e. specify details of operating system and browser
(language,
32 or 64 bit, version, service pack level, etc), and the
complete way to
replicate a problem you experienced, so me and/or the partner can
resolve the reported problem. |
PeaZip
installers for Windows, from 3.7 up to release 4.4, were with OpenCandy
advertising module, that display ads during the installation of the
software.
It is similar to Google AdSense, except it displays
advertisements (promoting software from qualified partners of the
advertising network) during the installation of a software
instead than on websites.
Partners includes well known entities
like Microsoft (Internet Explorer,
Bing toolbar), Real Player, AVG Antivirus, AOL, Nitro PDF Reader,
StumbleUpon, Wakoopa
and many others.
This partnership is meant as alternative to donations
and online ads
to help PeaZip project to get needed funding in order to keep on the
development, provide a quality hosting, and machines for testing,
porting and optimizing the application
on newer platforms, even if they have a small market share and may not
generate enough return to keep the platform-specific
development active by themselves.
|
This
partnership applies only to PeaZip for Windows and PeaZip for
Windows 64 bit installers.
All other packages does not feature advertising bundle: Linux packages,
PeaZip Portable packages, and PeaZip installers (plain) packages.
|
How does the advertising module works:
No ads outside
the
installer
A singe
advertisement
is shown, during last step of the software
installation.
Once the software is installed, the user not receive any
more advertisements.
Recommended
software can
always be declined: installers
failing to work that way are not autorized to partner with OpenCandy
advertising network
Recommended
software is not
needed to
install or run PeaZip, so can always be declined.
No unwanted software is installed: user can always accept or decline
the
recommendation, the user is in full control of what is installed,
and in no way the user's selection can be overridden or hampered by the
installer.
If preferred, partnership installers can be launched with /NOCANDY
parameter to disable running OpenCandy advertising module at all.
Recommended
software can be removed at any
time: it is a prerequisite for advertisers for being eligible of being
featured in OpenCandy network
Recommended
software are
separate products from third party and have their own separate
uninstallers.
Please refer to the third party programs' documentation for removing or
modifying third party software, usually uninstallers are available from
Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs, or in Start > All Programs
(in each program's folder), or reachable from the web browser for
toolbars and browser add-ons.
In no
way the user is hampered when uninstalling or otherwise modifying
the installed software.
Advertisers
are selected
by the author
OpenCandy platform allows partner
developers to select advertisers
eligible to display ads in their own installers.
I block advertisers which fails to address my personal requirements of
reputation and usefulness, and any feedback is welcome to improve the
quality of the recommendations.
|
Developers
participating to OpenCandy network must comply well defined
quality guidelines, see OpenCandy
Software Network Policies , for more
information see OpenCandy FAQ and OpenCandy Privacy
Policy
Before
publication, all packages, including
partnership
installers, are thoroughly
scanned with
multiple antimalware tools to ensure they are clean of any malware or
malware-like features.
Moreover, to utterly enforce user's security, most
download websites that host or links PeaZip packages does the same,
providing independent scan certifications, see in example download mirrors page.
Reporting
problems
Please
report to me and
to OpenCandy
any problem and suggestion either with
OpenCandy advertising module and about advertisers.
When
reporting issues please try to be more informative and detailed as
possible, i.e. specify details of operating system and browser
(language,
32 or 64 bit, version, service pack level, etc), and the
complete way to
replicate a problem you experienced.
OpenCandy needs this information in order to keeping providing a good
service, fix bugs and be informed about developers' and advertisers'
behavior with end users.
I can filter recommendations to be displayed in the installer, so
please inform me about low quality or
low reputation advertisers so they can be avoided to be shown at all.
To offer interesting, useful and safe software to end users is
important to me as it is important for end users to receive only
quality
recommendations: only the constant feedback of a community can make
this network improve in the long run, exactly as community feedback is
fundamental for running a good software project.
Please keep in mind OpenCandy advertising module is an alternative
funding source for PeaZip project, you are never forced to use it, as
alternative packages without third party bundle are available,
partnership installers can be started disabling the advertising module
(/NOCANDY), and in any case the recommendation can be declined, as
accepting it is not required to complete PeaZip's installation.
Moreover, you
are free to use, distribute and modify PeaZip in all its parts as it is
Open Source software, and in this way it fundamentally belongs to the
community.
How to avoid third parts software
- Use a non-partnership package, i.e. plain
installers
or PeaZip Portable, they does not contain OpenCandy advertising module.
- If a partnership installer is used, it
can be
started with /NOCANDY parameter to disable OpenCandy advertising module.
- If a partnership installer is used, the
recommendation is not mandatory for PeaZip installation and can be
declined: user choice is never overridden by the correctly implemented
adverstising module.
- If a recommended software was installed,
refer to
third party for uninstalling it.
|
I would like to be immediately
notified when are experienced problems regarding those critical areas:
- Partner's installer module must
give complete and correct information about the recommended software
- Partner's installer module must never override
user's
choice
to accept or decline the recommendation
- Partner's installer module and third party
recommended
software must not employ any technique that is considered harmful by
anti-malware programs: in this case, unless it is a false positive or
the claim is dismissed by wider consensus of most reliable anti-malware
software, the problem must be fixed as soon as possible
- Third party recommended software should give
complete and
correct information about how to uninstall it cleanly, and provide a
standard uninstaller
In case of any
doubt, I recommend to double-check any suspicious file
or URL, i.e. with a good online free scanner like Virustotal which
employs multiple antivirus/antimalware engines for maximum security and
to minimize
false positive reports, or URLVoid that merge
various online information sources about web domains.
