How to open and extract ZIPX archives

What is .ZIPX file extension

ZIPXzipx file format
is a compressed archive format developed by WinZipwindows zipper utility team, starting from WinZip 12.1 (released as trialware program on 13 September 2008) as alternative to classic PKZip's ZIP format.
WinZip's ZIPX standard is based on ZIP specifications with introduction of newer data compression algorithms - BZip, LZMA, PPMd and others (replacing classic Deflate, Deflate64, BZip2 algorithms) - providing high compression ratio, comparable with formats like RAR (native format for WinRar), WinAce's ACE, and in some cases 7-Zip's 7Z/XZ files.

On benchmark page you can compare how .zpix format compression / extraction fares, in terms of compression ration and computation speed, with mainstream formats such as .7z, .rar, and .zip, testing various software implementations (PeaZip, Winrar, WinZip).

PeaZip provides read only support for .zipx format: browse (list archive content, navigate and search inside archive), test file integrity, and extraction.
At current level of development, PeaZip cannot archive data in .zipx format, nor edit (add to / delete from) or update existing zipx container.
Please note that some compression algorithms used in ZIPX standard, as WawPack and proprietary WinZip's lossless jpeg compression models, are not yet supported by PeaZip (and 7-Zip / p7zip backend component).

zipx extractor

"Convert" button allows to extract and re-compress existing .zipx archives in order to have them converted to any other file type supported for writing by PeaZip (as ZIP, ARC, 7Z...), or consolidated into a new single archive in the selected format - zipx conversion can work on single or multiple input files.

How to extract ZIPX format with PeaZip, from 7z/p7zip backend on Microsoft Windows and Linux:
  • From system context menu, select desired .zipx archives (but archives of mixed types, e.g. .7z, .ace, .rar, .zip can be selected at once and managed simultaneously), right click and chose:
    • "Extract here" or "Extract here (to new folder)" directly starts de-compression of the selected archive(s)
    • "Extract..." shows full featured extraction screen, which allows user to specify output path and other options - i.e. password, deleting original archives after extraction, overwriting or renaming existing files etc
  • From PeaZip file manager, double click on a .zipx file (or, in MS Windows, you can double click the file from system's file explorer as by default PeaZip installer associates to .zipx extension) to open it and view its content - in example to inspect file names, date, size (to verify if it matches to what is expected before starting extraction), or to select only some chosen items for extraction rather than the whole archived content - and:
    • "Extract" button or Extract > Extract all in program's context menu, to show extraction screen and chose output path, enter password and other options before confirming the operation with "Ok" button.
    • "Extract all to..." button to simply select output directory and immediately start unpacking the .zipx file
    • drag chosen files or folders from the program to the system to start immediate extraction - please note PeaZip uses a custom drag & drop extraction routine that does not create intermediate temporary files, speeding up extraction to different partitions (e.g. removable disks), not requiring free temporary work space on system partition, and eliminating security concerns about out of place orphaned temporary files if the operation fails for whatever reason.
How to enter password in PeaZip to open/extract encrypted ZIPX archive:
  • In the main file/archive browser, click in the padlock icon encrypted zipx in the status bar (in the file/archive browser)
  • In file extraction screen the padlock icon is located below output address field
  • Click Tools > Enter password / keyfile in application's main menu, or press its accelerator hotkey F9
Password form shows optional field "Keyfile" for two factor authentication - keyfile can be any user selected file, but PeaZip provides its entropy sampling tool from "Tools" > "Create random password / keyfile" (or Ctrl+F9), in order to create unique files containing solely random data.
Using keyfile during archive creation improves security over simple password protection, as in this way decryption will require both user provided password ("what you know" element) and the keyfile ("what you have" factor).
